How Can I Make a Natural Deodorant?

· August 27, 2014

Do you suffer from irritated armpits? Don’t like the scent of deodorants that are sold in stores? Do you want to stop using chemical beauty products? Well, then, you can learn about the best recipes for making your own homemade, natural, and very economical antiperspirant.

Side Effects of Using Deodorant

There is a lot of research related to this cosmetic product that is used so much by men and women. Us consumers don’t analyze what they are made of and we use them no matter what, not knowing that they could cause serious skin problems, for example. The majority of the brands use aluminum chlorohydrate (known as aluminum salts), which clog your pores, don’t allow them to “breath”, and close the passage of sweat. A lot of people will say that obviously this is the deodorant’s job.

The problem is that it directly interrupts the natural process of temperature regulation. Therefore, it is stopping the body from working like it should, cooling the areas where it shouldn’t, which could be a problem for the body. Furthermore, there are some studies that show that the frequent use of deodorant can cause breast cancer because its substances penetrate through the skin and are deposited in this area because of how close the armpit is to it.

You will realize that deodorant is not all good when you stop using it and you smell worse. This is because the substances in the product remain “stuck” on your armpits, just like what happens to it on clothing. So, you have two options: start buying deodorant that doesn’t have aluminum salts or prepare your own antiperspirant at home.

Homemade Deodorant: Recipe 1

For the first option, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup of corn starch
  • 1/3 cup of baking soda
  • 10 drops of essential lavender oil, eucalyptus oil, or tea tree oil, all antibacterial
  • 10 drops of essential mint or sandalwood oil (for women, men should have 20 drops)
  • 3 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons of vitamin E oil (optional)

Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl until a thick paste is formed. Put it in an empty deodorant container and apply it daily. Be careful because too much will be uncomfortable.

In this case, the ingredients you will need are:

  • 3 cups of coconut oil
  • 2 cups of shea butter
  • 3 cups of baking soda
  • 2 cups of cornstarch
  • optional: essential oils

Melt the shea butter with the coconut oil in a double boiler until they are almost completely melted. Take it off the flame and add baking soda and cornstarch. Mix it well and stir in the essential oils. Put it in a glass bowl and let chill.

Homemade Deodorant: Recipe 3

This option has several ingredients, but its result is truly amazing:

  • 1 and a half tablespoons of beeswax
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
  • 1/2 tablespoon of cocoa butter
  • 15 drops of rosemary oil
  • 15 drops of white thyme oil
  • 25 drops of lavender oil
  • 3 drops of castor oil

Melt the beeswax in a double boiler and add the cocoa butter. When both of them are melted, add in the oils one by one. Mix it well and put it in a bowl and let chill. Use them after bathing, in small quantities.

Homemade Deodorant: Recipe 4

This natural deodorant is made with lemon and is very effective. You will need:

  • 100 ml of water
  • 20 ml of 90 proof alcohol
  • 4 tablespoons of rosemary
  • 5 drops of lemon essence
  • 10 drops of witch hazel extract

Boil the water and add in the dry rosemary leaves. Turn off the heat and let it sit for ten minutes, with the pot covered. Then add the alcohol, witch hazel, and lemon essence. Mix it well and bottle it in a glass jar.

Homemade Deodorant: Recipe 5

In this case, it is a recipe with oranges, very simple to do:

  • 3 lemon peels
  • 3 orange peels
  • 1 liter of water
  • 3 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 1 cup of sea salt

Grate the fruit peels and boil them with the water. Strain and let chill. Add the sea salt and baking soda. Mix well and put it in another bowl. You can use it for your armpits and other parts of your body or even for a relaxing bath.

Homemade Deodorant: Recipe 6

This recipe has two ways to prepare it: standard and special for sensitive skin. For the first one you will need:

  • 1/4 cup of baking soda
  • 1/4 cup of corn starch
  • 10 drops of tea tree oil
  • 3 tablespoons of coconut oil

For the second one you will need:

  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 6 tablespoons of corn starch
  • 10 drops of tea tree oil
  • 3 tablespoons of coconut oil

As an option for both, you can use whichever essential oils you like. If you want to moisturize your skin more, use vitamin E or almond oil.

Mix the baking soda with the cornstarch and tea tree oil in a cup or bowl. Add the coconut oil and stir it until it forms a paste. This is the time to add almond oil or vitamin E. You can also add in essential oils with whatever fragrance you like, like lavender, eucalyptus, sandalwood or rose. Use only a couple drops because they give off a strong aroma. Put the preparation into a deodorant stick. At first it will be a little smooth and creamy, but after a few days, it will harden and be the same as the ones you buy in the store.
