Over time, sun exposure and bad habits can cause irregular skin pigmentation. That can lead to dark skin spots in some cases. In others, there are spots that seem much lighter, like a portion of your skin has lost its pigmentation. In this article, we’ll explain how you can treat skin spots naturally with the help of lemon, strawberries, rosehip, aloe vera, and turmeric.

Why do we get spots on our skin?

If you want to treat skin spots, keep reading: we’ll explain a few of the best natural ways to do it without damaging your skin. But if you have lots of spots on your skin, take a moment to think about what might be causing the problem to keep new spots from appearing.

The most common causes of skin depigmentation are:

  • Excessive sun exposure, especially without sunscreen.
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy.
  • The use of oral birth control.
  • Chronic acne.
  • Aging.

Using lemon to treat skin spots

We’re going to start by looking at dark spots, which you can treat with the excellent properties of lemons.

On top of being a purifying agent, this citrus is perfect for whitening, cleansing, and disinfecting your skin.

If you have sensitive skin, you might find lemon a bit aggressive, so we suggest mixing it with a few drops of liquid glycerin, which you can find at your local pharmacy.

Mix the two in a small glass container. You can also add a few drops of vitamin E, which is used as a preservative in cosmetic products. Store the mixture in your fridge.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera, used by many cultures to treat skin problems, is a plant that helps to hydrate oily skin and prevent scarring from acne marks and other injuries. You can use the gel that comes straight out of the plant, or buy aloe vera gel in a pharmacy or herbalist shop. But as always, the more natural the better, because the raw plant will give you all its amazing properties.

We recommend applying aloe vera two times per day and waiting until it dries to use your normal moisturizing lotion.

Strawberry

Strawberries are another fruit you can use to gradually get rid of dark skin spots. Applying it is a bit more complicated than it is with other fruits, so we suggest applying one natural mask per week as a complement your daily lemon or aloe vera treatment plan.

Mash one ripe strawberry with a fork and apply it directly to the skin spot. Let it set for half an hour and then wash it off with water.

Rosehip oil

Rosehip oil is the best way to treat skin spots, whether the dark or light kind, because it has the ability to regulate skin pigmentation. If you have hyperpigmentation (dark-colored spots), this oil will lighten your skin tone over time. Or, if you have a depigmented area lighter in color than the rest of your skin, it will help restore that pigmentation.

How do you use it?

  1. You can apply the pure, undiluted version of this oil to your skin, unlike other oils that might irritate your skin and need to be diluted.
  2. You should apply it two times per day to the affected area.
  3. It’s usually available in herbalist shops or in natural cosmetics stores, but avoid buying it in places that don’t have a certification showing the product’s quality.
  4. Store it in a hermetically sealed dark glass bottle.

Turmeric

Turmeric, a spice that we’ve mentioned quite a lot on this blog, has a variety of anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, along with the ability to get rid of spots, nourish the skin and reduce inflammation, making it great for people with sensitive skin or eczema. We recommend it especially for lighter-colored skin spots.

Here’s a homemade lotion that you can prepare to make it easier to apply turmeric to your skin. You just need a bit of powdered turmeric and bee honey.

How do you make it?

  1. Mix high-quality honey with powdered turmeric until you’ve achieved a thick texture. Apply this mask to the depigmented area and let it set for half an hour. Finally, rinse well with water to remove the mask.
  2. Perform this treatment every day for at least one month.
