Dot Nails: The Latest Trend in Minimalist Nails

Last update: 15 October, 2022

Minimalism has arrived in the world of hands in its maximum expression. More precisely, it’s reached the art that’s captured on our nails when we decide to have a manicure. That’s right: we’re talking about the dot nails trend.

Dot nails is a technique that’s based on the drawing of dots (of any size and color) on the nails.

We know that social networks are responsible for publicizing new trends in the world of fashion and nail beauty. When something is liked, it doesn’t take long for it to become massive and replicated with all the variables. Bearing this in mind, let’s take a look at what this minimalist nail style is all about!

Dot nails is minimalism in its purest state

It’s often thought that minimalist decor is rather monotonous, monochromatic, and austere and that it’s only applied in decoration. However, this isn’t always the case, and it certainly isn’t the case in the field of hand beauty.

The dot nails technique brings elegance, style, and a lot of glamour to the nails. It can also change the look of your hands completely. It’s very easy to apply; you just have to let your imagination run wild and create original designs based on dots.

Since it’s so easy to do, you can do it yourself at home. Or you can go to the beauty salon with a design you have in mind.

It should be noted that if you do it with a professional, the finish will be better and will last much longer with semi-permanent nail polish, for example. These are dried with ultraviolet light.

The basis of this technique is to apply small dots on the nails, combining them with nail polish. It’s true that in the beginning, only a small dot was made in the center of the nail at the cuticle. However, as time went by, new ideas were added that follow a minimalist line.

Five ideas for applying dot nails

Here are some ideas or suggestions that you can implement in your dot nails manicure. Remember that if you’re going to do it at home, you have to have all the elements your need close by.

1. A skin color base with dots

Start with a base design from which many other ideas can be derived. This consists of applying two coats of a skin-colored polish or the one used for a classic French manicure.

When it’s dry, draw small dots in the center of the nail, near the cuticle. You can choose any color you like. This will look great with the neutral tone of the base polish. Then, you have to apply a nail polish protector so that the work lasts a couple of days.

2. Black and its many variations

The black color on the nails is a classic that is always in force, and that looks good in any of its forms. In this opportunity, you can opt for a clear base (like the French manicure) and make a black dot.

Also, you can paint one of the nails of each hand in black so that the harmony of colors can be better noticed. The effect is great, and this is a design that works for all occasions.

3. Color dots

To do this, you will also use a neutral base, only it can be another color and not necessarily the one of the French manicure. The idea is to apply dots of different colors on the same nail. Here are some options for inspiration:

  • The same color, but in different shades: You can choose 5 colors (one for each nail, for instance) and apply 3 or 4 shades of the same tone in a gradient. This way, you will have blues, greens, oranges, pinks, and violets on the same hand. We recommend going from the bottom to the top and from the darkest to the lightest. Remember that the dots are small and that if you don’t do this design in a salon, you will have to own several shades of nail polish.
  • Two colors in between: You can opt for two different shades and apply them in between your nails.
  • Several colors on the same nail: In this case, you will make five rows of dots of different colors, but each row will be the same shade. The result will be a row of orange dots next to a green one, and so on.

The placement of the dots can be central or lateral. Either way will look good.

4. Contrasting colors

If you want to take the dot nails style to the extreme, you can choose a strong base color and apply dots in a contrasting tone. For example, choose a yellow polish and make blue dots. The combinations are endless, and it all depends on your style and imagination!

You can go for less sober designs if you think it’s a good idea. There are no limits to the combinations that are possible with this style.

5. Dots nails with appliqués

In this case, the dots are glitter-like appliqués that adhere to the nail with special glue. The final result is very glamorous, as your nails will radiate and sparkle with each movement.
