There are conflicting opinions about this popular beverage worldwide. Some people believe there are benefits of coffee while others believe just the opposite. But as for the topical (external) use of coffee, there’s no doubt it can be an important beauty ally – that’s why it’s incorporated into cosmetic therapies, creams and lotions. Find out about the beauty benefits of coffee in the following article.
Properties of coffee
When we think of coffee, one of the most popular beverages in the world, we often think of it as giving us motivation for meeting up with friends, after-dinner conversations, and waking up in the morning or during a break at work. But coffee has many other properties that we often overlook. Its high caffeine content stimulates fat burning, which promotes weight loss and the reduction of cellulite.
For external use, coffee is a highly effective natural exfoliant, as the coffee grounds stimulate cell renewal. It has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe red and irritated skin, and it has an astringent effect that eliminates odors and promotes deep cleansing. It’s also a natural antioxidant that protects the skin from the harmful effects of free radicals, which cause premature aging.
There are different theories as to the amount of coffee that is recommended. Some say you should drink three cups of coffee a day (about 500 mg of caffeine in total) to stimulate concentration, attention, learning and memory. It’s believed to fight depression and relieve drowsiness, increasing energy and feelings of happiness.
In the cosmetic industry, coffee is used for aesthetic purposes, especially for women. Coffee beans are a primary ingredient in some beauty products and therapies, which firm, tone, and define the physique. Some spas offer “coffee therapies” to revitalize the skin, using coffee-based peeling face masks. The result is more fresh, hydrated, youthful and soft skin.
Coffee and cellulite
Most therapies that have coffee as a main ingredient are used to treat a problem that affects most (if not all) of the world’s women: cellulite. Coffee has properties that can eliminate the dreaded “dimpled skin” effect because caffeine makes it easier to break down the fat cells that accumulate under the surface. It also boosts circulation, increases the levels of “fat burning” enzymes, has an excellent lipolytic effect, and more. Because of this, coffee is one of the best anti-cellulite and slimming treatments.
A lot of the slimming gels available today contain coffee among their ingredients. But it’s worth noting that caffeine alone doesn’t work miracles – other steps are needed, like determination, commitment, exercise, a healthy diet, and two liters of water per day.
If these products aren’t available where you are, you can quickly and easily make your own coffee-based slimming treatment. Take the used coffee grinds and apply them directly to the thighs, buttocks, arms, abdomen, etc. – anywhere you have cellulite. Always use an upward circular motion to stimulate circulation, and eventually those unpleasant little dimples will disappear. Another option is to mix the grinds with a little water, apply them to the skin and cover with plastic wrap to absorb for a few minutes before rinsing.
Coffee to eliminate dark circles
In addition to the properties mentioned above, it’s been shown that coffee can improve the appearance of dark circles under the eyes, making one look much better. This works for the same reason that coffee is excellent for cellulite: it activates blood circulation. Indeed, under-eye circles form because blood isn’t “flowing” freely, due to lack of sleep, alcohol consumption, poor diet, overwork, or other reasons.
Caffeine can relieve and open up the entire eye area. You can make coffee compresses and apply them beneath the eyes (or over closed eyelids) for a few minutes. Take the opportunity to rest for a little while, take a warm bath, or listen to soothing music. Many concealer products on the market contain caffeine as a main ingredient.
Coffee as an exfoliant
Applying coffee grounds to the body as a scrub helps to eliminate dead skin cells. Face and body masks with coffee are easy to make and have spectacular results. Be sure to use a circular pattern to massage them into the skin to leave it more soft, bright and clean.
A good recipe for a homemade coffee mask is to mix two tablespoons of plain yogurt with one tablespoon of sugar and one of coffee grounds. Apply it to the skin in an upward circular motion and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Don’t forget to use your favorite homemade or commercial moisturizer, as long as it is nourishing and hydrating.
So now you know: don’t throw away those used coffee grinds. Take advantage of them to reduce cellulite and dark under-eye circles, remove dead skin, exfoliate the face, and look more radiant.
