· December 8, 2018
If you've got bad breath even though you have good oral hygiene, it's possible that you have some other problem and you should visit a doctor.

Bad breath, or halitosis, is very unpleasant and can often cause anxiety. There is a wide variety of products available in the shops, such as chewing gum, mouthwash, and other products, which are designed to treat bad breath.

However, the effects are only temporary and they don’t address the root cause of bad breath.

The main causes of bad breath are poor eating habits and other health-related matters. Fortunately, however, this condition can often be addressed with the right oral hygiene.

If these techniques don’t help, then you need to go and visit your doctor or dentist. That way, you’ll be able to find out what is causing your bad breath and be sure that it’s nothing serious.

Symptoms of Bad Breath

The signs of bad breath are obvious and people around you will notice them, too:

  • Air coming from the mouth and nose smells bad.
  • There is a persistent bad taste in the mouth.
  • People you talk to tend to move away from you.

There’s also the possibility that your gums might be bleeding which is a sign of gingivitis which can cause bad breath too. Most people who have this condition don’t realize it.

Causes

If you don’t brush your teeth every day, food will stay in your mouth and accumulate bacteria which causes bad breath. Foods like garlic and onions can also contribute to bad breath. Once they’ve been eaten and absorbed into the bloodstream, the smell reaches the lungs, and thus cause bad breath.

Tobacco products also cause bad breath. If you smoke, it’s a good idea to go to a dentist to get rid of the residues or, better yet, give up smoking.

Other causes of bad breath include:

  • Local infections in the respiratory system
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Diabetes
  • Postnasal drip
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Kidney or liver disease

If your dentist says that your mouth is healthy, but you still suffer from bad breath, we recommend you go and see a doctor.
