How to Grow Blueberries at Home

Due to everything we explained above, growing blueberries at home is very beneficial.  Now, what steps and considerations should we keep in mind to do so?

Here are some guidelines that will help you out.

The Flowerpot

The type and size will depend on how you start the cultivation process. If you start with seeds, you’ll need a small container. But if you start with a seedling, you should use a small flowerpot.

As your shrub grows, you’ll need a larger flowerpot or plant it in soil. After the third or fourth year, your shrub will occupy about a 60 to 70-liter flowerpot.

The Soil

Blueberry plants prefer acidic soil, preferably with a 4.5 pH.

To make your soil more acidic, you can use additives such as compost, sulfur, or peat. Cottonseed meal and pine needles compost also make your soil more acidic.

Steps to Follow to Grow Blueberries at Home

  • First, place a thick napkin in a small container and add some water. Then, place some seeds in it.
  • Pick up the seeds one by one and plant them in the soil. Then, cover them up.
  • Water the plant every day and make sure to always keep it moist.
  • You have to place the flowerpot in a well-lit spot where it’ll be protected from the wind.
  • The soil must be turned to ensure proper plant oxygenation and drainage.
  • After planting the seeds, you can make mulch with branches or oak or pine leaves. This will help prevent weeds, retain moisture, and keep the soil acid.

Special Care

Try not to put too many seeds in the same flowerpot since the blueberry plant needs some space to grow properly. Also, the soil should be fairly moist when you plant the seeds.

When the plant grows, you’ll need to move it to a larger pot or directly to the ground. When you do so, you have to completely moisten the roots so they don’t suffer in the process. We recommend soaking them in a bucket of water for about 10 minutes before replanting them. Once you finish replanting, wet the soil where you planted them.

Finally, remember that blueberries grow best in cold weather. It’s a plant that adapts well to the cold, even at extreme temperatures. However, the plant suffers in the heat. Make sure to take really good care of it during hot weather and don’t leave it out in the sun.
