Exercise, like walking, can help people recover from depression.  When people become depressed or anxious, they frequently feel they have no control over their lives.  Exercise, however, gives them control over their bodies, which is frequently the first step to feeling like you have control over other events.

Anybody suffering from depression can benefit from exercising regularly, but it is especially beneficial for those with mild depression.  In regards to the type of exercise, any type is always useful when you adapt it to yourself, and when you do enough.  The exercise should be something you like; if not, it will be hard to find the motivation to do it.

How often do I need to exercise?

To stay healthy, adults should do 150 minutes of moderate to intense activity every week.  If you haven’t exercised in quite some time, you should introduce physical activity into your daily routine, little by little.  Even a 15 minute walk can help you relax and clear your mind.  Remember, any exercise is better than none.

How do I start?

Participating in group sports, taking a class at a sports center, or just being more active in your daily walking routine, or even riding your bike to work instead of driving, can make a huge difference in your daily life and well-being.  Find something that you can do regularly.  The most important thing to remember is to start little by little, if it has been a long time since you’ve exercised.  You can start by walking for 15 minutes, and later increase to 30 minutes of walking.  You can also walk faster over time, which will produce better results.  Just keep in mind that however you exercise, it should be right for you.
