Crab cake is a delicious specialty from the state of Maryland, in the United States. As its name suggests, it consists of minced crab meat shaped like a patty. In this article, we share two easy crab cake recipes you’ll love!

As we mentioned above, this dish is characteristic of the Chesapeake Bay area, in the North American states of Maryland and Virginia. Usually, it’s made from blue crab meat, which is typical of the area. However, you can make it with other crab species.

Actually, it’s almost a crab meat “hamburger,” which is why people usually serve it in a bun and with condiments such as ketchup or tartar sauce. However, there are many different forms of presentation and plating, depending on the restaurant’s style.

In any case, do you know what the nutritional properties of crab and its health benefits are?

Rich in minerals, fatty acids, and antioxidants, crab is an ideal food to include in your diet.

Crab is a food rich in minerals such as iodine, magnesium, and selenium. Thus, consuming crab may help improve your nervous, muscular, and immune systems. Also, crab meat is a source of healthy fatty acids and vitamins, such as vitamins E and B3.

On the other hand, it only contains 90 calories per 100 grams, meaning it’s low in calories and is therefore perfect for healthy diets.

Here are other benefits of consuming crab meat:

  • More than 70% of crab is water, meaning it contributes to hydration.
  • It’s low in fat.
  • It contains natural antioxidants.

However, it’s high in sodium, so experts don’t recommend crab for people with cardiovascular problems. In fact, for this reason, they recommend consuming it in moderation.

Crab cake recipes

First recipe: baked and with a touch of pepper

Ingredients

  • 500 grams of crab meat (only the meat)
  • ½ tablespoon of salt
  • ½ tablespoon of pepper
  • 30 ml. of olive oil
  • 3/4 cup of breadcrumbs
  • A pinch of paprika
  • 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise
  • 4 scallions
  • 4 tablespoons of red bell pepper
  • 1 tablespoon of chopped parsley

Preparation

  • First, cook the crab meat for about five minutes. After this time, you’ll see that it acquires its characteristic red color. That means that it’s ready to use.
  • At this point, you can preheat your oven to 450ºF. This way, it’ll reach the right temperature while you make the crab cakes.
  • After that, sauté the scallions and the peppers (previously washed and chopped into small pieces) in a frying pan with the olive oil.
  • Then, add the salt, pepper, breadcrumbs, paprika, and parsley in a bowl and mix them well.
  • Next, add the scallions and peppers to this mixture and continue mixing everything very well.
  • After that, add the crab meat and the mayonnaise and make sure that everything is well integrated.
  • Take a part of the mixture with your hands and make a patty with it.
  • Then, coat it in breadcrumbs. Place the crab cakes in the oven tray and bake for 12-15 minutes, until they’re golden brown.

Second recipe: fried and with a touch of lemon

Fried crab cakes.
Just like it does with other seafood, lemon enhances the flavor of crab cakes.

Crab goes perfectly well with lemon. Therefore, don’t miss out on this recipe!

Ingredients

  • 4 scallions
  • 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon zest
  • 1/4 tablespoon of fresh pepper
  • Salt (a pinch, as crab is rich in sodium)
  • 1 tablespoon of chopped parsley
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 2/3 cup of breadcrumbs
  • 500 grams of crab meat
  • Olive oil

Preparation

  • To make this recipe, you have to follow the same steps as the previous one. However, in this case, you don’t add the pepper and, instead, add lemon zest and a beaten egg to the mixture.
  • Once all the ingredients are well-mixed and the mixture is smooth and unified, heat a frying pan with plenty of oil. Then, take some of the mixture and shape it into a patty and fry it.
  • Ideally, fry each crab cake for about three minutes on each side until they turn golden-brown.

Don’t forget that one of the secrets of the success of these crab cake recipes is the sauce you’ll accompany them with. Whether it’s plain yogurt, ketchup, mayonnaise, or something more complicated, such as tartar sauce or remoulade, it can definitely make a difference.
