The Dangers of Creams: The Expert Opinion
The dangers of creams can be easily avoided. We have to follow specific advice to ensure the correct use of the product. We'll tell you all about these tips in this article!
We bet you haven’t ever heard of the dangers of creams. Who doesn’t use creams or cosmetics nowadays? There are so many places where we can buy these products. In addition, they come in a variety of price ranges, so they’re available to everyone.
However, most people aren’t aware of the dangers of creams, especially creams that aren’t sold in specialized stores. In these places, there’s no one to tell us about the best way to use them.
It’s for this reason that the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) has prepared a report to warn about the misuse of these cosmetics. The aim is to try to reduce the associated risks.
This report, known as “Good practices in the use of cosmetic products“, is divided into two main sections:
- The misuse of products
- Bad practices associated with the use of products
Let’s take a look at the dangers of creams if they aren’t used properly. We recommend putting these tips into practice to reduce the risks they could cause.
What are the most common misuses of creams?
One of the worst habits we have when using a cream is that we don’t give the product the importance it deserves. We ignore the recommendations provided by the manufacturer, which increases the dangers of these products when using them.
Not reading these recommendations is like not being informed about the use of medications by not looking at the package insert. Many creams contain active substances that, if not applied in a certain way, can cause damage to the skin.
For example, we tend to overlook the expiration date of these products, as well as the most suitable place and environment for their storage.
And, although these bad habits often only result in the inactivation of substances, there are other risks as well. The molecules that form the creams can be converted into other molecules, providing undesirable effects for the consumer. How can we avoid the dangers associated with the misuse of creams?
In addition to the aforementioned report, the AEMPS has also published a series of tips that we should implement when using creams and cosmetics. If we use them, we’ll be able to considerably reduce the related dangers.
First of all, they recommend always reading the product labeling, as well as the instructions for use and the warnings and precautions for use, as stated in this report from the Government of the Canary Islands.
By being well informed, we’ll be able to guarantee the beneficial effects of the product in question.
Secondly, you should never use a cream or cosmetic for a purpose other than that intended by the manufacturer. If we do so, we could trigger other health problems.
Thirdly, we suggest respecting the minimum shelf life, or the period after opening the product that’s indicated on the product.
The fourth tip is to store the products properly, as well as to keep the containers clean and well closed. It’s also important to avoid exposure to extreme temperatures and sunlight.
The sun’s rays could modify the structure of the molecules causing the products to lose effectiveness or, in the worst case, trigger dangerous effects.
In addition, it’s essential to wash your hands before using any cosmetic product. This will prevent infections.

Other tips to avoid the dangers of creams
Aside from all the advice mentioned above, the AEMPS also suggests that we take into account the following:
- Don’t share objects that may be in contact with biological fluids.
- Don’t mix products or add any additional substance to the cosmetic.
- Avoid changing the packaging in which it comes from the factory.
- If we use a disposable product, throw it away immediately after use and don’t use it again.
- If there’s any defect in the product, throw it out.
