Soothe Your Baby’s Colic with These Four Home Remedies

Is your baby suffering from colic? Try these four natural remedies.

Anyone who’s had a baby knows that colic is one of the most frustrating experiences. With colic, babies cry for hours, even though everything seems to fine with them.

They don’t have a fever, their diaper is dry, they’ve just eaten, and yet they continue to sob. And you can’t do anything except ask what’s wrong with them.

The stress is enormous, you even think that you’re not a parent. You think, “I’m the adult here, shouldn’t I control the situation and protect my child from all illnesses?”

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably experienced this scene on more than one occasion. But you know what? The exact cause of colic is unknown.

In fact, it’s defined as repeated long-lasting crying episodes during the week, with no apparent origin.

However, one study reveals that a percentage of children had a higher sensitivity to this issue than others.

And the truth is that this seems logical if we stop to think about it. Imagine the tranquility of being inside a womb and pay attention to what is happening around you.

Imagine the contrast of darkness and light, the mother’s heartbeat and noise, and continuous satisfaction and hunger … This antithesis causes anxiety in babies that manifests itself in the only way they know how to express themselves: crying.

It’s therefore essential that we help them to relax.

Soothe your baby’s colic  with 4 remedies

1. Chamomile tea

Chamomile contains a substance called glycine that has relaxing effects. In addition, all its components are very gentle so your baby can ingest it without any problems.

  • However, if you have any doubts then you can moisten the pacifier with some of the tea before your baby drinks it directly.
  • If your baby tolerates it well, then they can take a sip of it from the bottle.
  • If everything continues to go well then your baby can drink this tea more often.

Furthermore, babies often have gas and this remedy will come in handy for that issue, too.

2. Create a relaxed atmosphere

You can create a calm atmosphere to calm colic as well as to prevent it. Use a dim light, surround your baby with it, and give them something nice to hold on to.

You can even use those recordings that reproduce the sounds of when we’re in the womb.

So your baby will feel that they’re in a safe place, just like when they were in that place where everything is peaceful and tranquil, where they didn’t need to strive to achieve anything. Their stress will decrease and this will make them stop crying.

  • If you prefer, you can opt to put on other relaxing music, such as Mozart or other composers. The most important thing is that you shouldn’t leave your baby in silence.
  • Remember that they didn’t know about silence until they came into the world. In fact, this is one of the reasons why it’s so difficult for them to sleep alone.

3. Rock them

los niños necesitan nuestros abrazos para ser parte del mundo
Another way to take your child symbolically to that safe place they were used to is to rock them back and forth with their head on your chest.

  • This movement will transport them to their first home since it’s very similar to the one they felt when their mother walked.
  • Also, having their ear close to your heart will allow them to notice the beat that accompanied them in the womb, which is a great tool to relieve your baby.

4. Warm water bath

We’re again talking about replicating the environment of the uterus. There, children are surrounded by amniotic fluid. Therefore, the feeling of buoyancy reassures them greatly.

You can also use the recordings we talked about earlier here. In fact, if you combine these two measures, your baby’s environment is almost identical to the one that they long for.

Their experience of reaching the world is quite traumatic. For example, this is the first time that they had taken a breath given that they never needed to do that in the womb.

It’s their first time doing it. Therefore, it’s not surprising that some very sensitive children find life to be a hostile place that exhausts them.

Although we’re always by their side to help them their getting used to their new surroundings is as difficult as landing on a desert island for us.

The difference is that adults have words to express themselves and babies cry.
