What is scoliosis?

Normally, scoliosis is mild and doesn’t produce symptoms. In some cases, it’s possible to observe that there’s one shoulder higher than the other or an asymmetry in the waist. One shoulder blade may even be more prominent than the other.

Complications of scoliosis
The problem is that there are certain degrees of scoliosis that compromise the entire structure of the spine. When the deviation is very large, the ribs may protrude more on one side of the body than the other.
When this occurs, the lungs may be damaged due to the pressure of the ribs themselves. Also, we should keep in mind that if the scoliosis is of a high degree, the appearance of that person may be affected and this also leads to self-esteem problems.

How can back pain be relieved?
The pain caused by scoliosis can usually be relieved by correcting postural habits. For example, it’s very important to sit while keeping the back as straight as possible. To do this, you should choose comfortable chairs with backrests and armrests for work.
Similarly, you should pay attention to the way you walk and correct it. Many people tend to slouch forward. However, you must keep your shoulders straight, walking with your head upright and your abdomen contracted.
Experts recommend doing exercises that strengthen the muscles of the back but without forcing it too much. For example, swimming is very appropriate. Yoga or Pilates can also be useful, as they also help to stretch the muscles.
In addition, we must bear in mind that, if scoliosis causes back pain that’s persistent, it’s best to consult a specialist. Sometimes, anti-inflammatory drugs or analgesics are needed to alleviate the situation.
