Therefore, it’s generally recommended that you use them after consulting with your doctor, to avoid interfering with the treatment they prescribe. You should also avoid using several remedies at the same time, as this could be counterproductive and aggravate the problem, instead of helping to improve the issue.

5 natural remedies for fungi

1. Rosemary, lemon, and garlic

To treat toenail fungus, you can prepare a mixture of rosemary, lemon, and garlic. The reason for this is that these three foods are said to have antifungal, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties.


  • 2 cups of water (500 ml)
  • 1 lemon
  • 5 cloves of garlic
  • ½ cup of rosemary leaves (50 g)

What should you do?

  • Heat the two cups of water in a pot.
  • Cut the lemon with its peel and add them to the boiling water together with the garlic and rosemary leaves.
  • After boiling for 10 minutes.
  • Let the mixture cool and then refrigerate it.
  • This preparation should be used to wash the affected area daily. 

2. Yogurt and lemon

Other beliefs indicate that the mixture of natural yogurt (without sugar) and lemon juice can contribute to the treatment of toenail fungus. This is because these two foods are considered to have an effective fungicidal effect.


What should you do?

  • Mix the yogurt with the lemon drops.
  • Spread the preparation directly on the affected areas.
  • Leave on for at least one hour. Then, wash thoroughly with plenty of water.
  • Dry the area completely to avoid the spread of the fungi.

Note: There are those who use lemon oil instead of the fruit’s juice to prepare this remedy against toenail fungus.

3. Apple cider vinegar

There are many types of vinegar, but it is believed that apple cider vinegar can be especially useful for treating toenail fungus. According to beliefs, its application influences the pH of the skin, making it uninhabitable for fungi.


  • 4 cups of water (1 liter)
  • 2 cups of apple cider vinegar (500 ml)

What should you do?

  • Just add the vinegar to the liter of water and mix well.
  • With this liquid, the affected area should be submerged for 20 minutes daily.

4. Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is said to contain monoterpenes with antifungal and bactericidal properties. Therefore, in the popular culture,  many recommend taking advantage of it in the following way to treat toenail fungus.


  • 3 tablespoons of tea tree oil (45 ml)
  • ¼ glass of tea (50 ml)
  • ¼ glass of olive oil (50 ml)
  • 3 tablespoons of aloe vera gel (45 ml)

What should you do?

  • Mix the ingredients together
  • Apply the preparation to the affected areas three times a day until the problem goes away.

What’s the best thing to do and what other treatment options are there?

When faced with a fungal infection of the toenails or any other health problem, the most sensible thing to do is to go to the doctor and follow their advice. There’s no need to worry if the treatment prescribed is pharmacological. Not only will it be safe (if used correctly), but its objective will be far from damaging your health.

In this sense, it’s good to remember that many of the existing drugs are the product (refined and improved) of the properties of a certain compound or natural substance.
