For several decades now, researchers have focused their studies on the relationship between nutrition and cancer, and they have come to the conclusion that some foods increase your risk of suffering from this illness.
Among the main foods related to cancer development is refined sugar, which is a food that is present in most homes around the world and that people love to eat because of its flavor.
Sugar, a cancerous food
According to the researchers at the University of California in San Francisco, refined sugar is a big risk to your health, so much so that it should be considered as toxic as elements such as alcohol and tobacco. Several studies have shown that frequent sugar consumption causes more than 35 million deaths around the world each year, because in addition to being strongly linked to diabetes, sugar is also related to the development of chronic diseases such as cancer.
Among the harmful effects of sugar consumption are: diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hyper and hypoglycemia, gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and heart disease. In terms of its connection to cancer development, sugar is still the subject of many research projects and experiments, and, over time, these studies have proven that there is a strong relationship between cancer development and sugar consumption.
The conventional medical community has always supported the idea that the link between the consumption of certain foods and cancer development is “weak,” because they have yet to find any valid medical patterns to support such a connection. However, as the debate surrounding this topic continues to go on, a great number of scientists, doctors, and many other alternative doctors have found that one efficient, safe and economic way to treat cancer is to cut down on the consumption of certain foods that fuel tumors and cancerous cells, such as glucose. This therapeutic strategy is aimed at “starving” the tumors by modifying the person’s diet, which is key to winning the cancer battle.
One of the first groups to discover that cancer feeds on sugars were the researchers at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Utah. In a study published in the National Academy of Science’s journal Proceedings, they clarified that the medical community has known since 1923 that tumorous cells need much more glucose than normal cells. The study explains how this process occurs and how a patient can regulate their sugar consumption as a way of controlling the growth of the tumor.
On the other hand, a research study by Dr. Thomas Graeber and his colleagues, published in 2012 in the Molecular Systems Biology journal, proved that depriving cancerous cells of glucose causes them to die due to the toxic accumulation of species that react with oxygen.
Refined sugar consumption is widely linked to cancer because, in addition to being one of the causes of cancer, it also fuels cancerous cells once the patient has developed this disease. These findings should definitely play a part in any cancer treatment, because they could possibly help to produce better results. Once cancerous cells appear in your body, they depend on a regular supply of glucose to continue growing.
Anyone can do something to prevent cancer and easily get rid of the obvious culprits, as is the case with refined sugar. Although it is clear that nutrition isn’t the only factor that leads to this disease, it definitely plays a very important rule, even though some may not think so.
We should all be aware of the harm that we may be doing to our bodies by consuming too many carcinogenic foods, such as refined sugar, and try to reduce our consumption or completely cut it out of our diets. Remember that this sugar is present in many of the foods we consume on a daily basis: cakes, candies, cookies, desserts, such cereals, breads, and sauces, among others.
