The ingredients you’ll need to prepare a delicious walnut flan

The following ingredients come together to make 8 servings:

  • 3 cups of milk (750 milliliters)
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 cup of sugar (200 grams)
  • 1 cup of peeled walnuts (100 grams)
  • 150 grams of cookies (6 oz)
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence

To prepare the caramel for the base, you’ll need:

  • Half a cup of sugar (100 grams)
  • 3 tablespoons of water

How to prepare your walnut flan

  • Before starting, turn on the oven to 350 degrees and introduce a tray with water. This has to be large enough to be able to put the flan mold inside.
  • The next step is to prepare the caramel for the base. To do this, place a saucepan on the heat and add the sugar (half a cup) and the water. When the edges begin to take on a dark tone, stir the contents a little to obtain a homogeneous mixture. Then, pour into the bottom of the mold, being careful not to burn yourself.
  • To make the flan base, break the eggs into a bowl or container. Mix very gently with the sugar until you obtain a more or less uniform dough. Then add the milk and the vanilla essence. You don’t need to beat it because you don’t want it to become bubbly or fluffy.
  • With a mixer or food processor, grind the cookies and nuts and mix with the liquid ingredients.
  • Pour the preparation into the mold with the caramel and bake in a bain-marie in the oven for about 45 minutes. To know if the walnut flan is ready, prick it with a toothpick or a sharp knife. If it comes out clean, the dessert is ready.
  • Let it cool a little and put it in the refrigerator. To obtain a perfect dessert, you should let it rest for 24 hours in the refrigerator before eating.

For people with lactose intolerance, you can use lactose-free cow’s milk or a vegetable almond drink. In addition, you can also use gluten-free cookies to make the recipe celiac friendly.

Be careful when unmolding so that your flan looks perfect.

Walnut flan is a dessert that will surprise and please your guests, thanks to its delicate flavor and texture. However, this can all be ruined if you break it when unmolding. While the flavor will remain the same, the presentation won’t be nearly as attractive.

An essential point to prevent this from happening is to wait until the flan’s well set and cold before you remove it from its mold. Keeping the dessert in the fridge for at least 6 hours ideal time to prevent it from breaking when you take it out.

When serving, run a thin knife around the edges of the flan. You don’t need to go all the way to the bottom because the part that sticks the most is the top. Then, place a flat plate over the mold and turn it over quickly and firmly.

Place on a flat surface and carefully remove the mold. If it still refuses to come out, the problem may be due to the caramel. To solve it, place the mold in a tray with a little hot water for 10 seconds to soften it. Then, dry the mold and proceed to turn it over as before.

The final touches

Once you’ve unmolded your walnut flan, it’s time to present it at the table. There are many possible accompaniments and decorations to make it look perfect.

One of the possible options is to serve it with whipped cream or a little chocolate syrup on top. You can also cut some slices of strawberries or baked apple with cinnamon, as they’re flavors that combine well.

If you have more time, set aside a few halved walnuts. With a little water and sugar, caramelize them, and when they’re dry, place them on top of the flan. They add an extra sweet touch and a crunchy texture.

Whatever the case, the walnut flan by itself is a wonderful sweet that looks great at the end of a meal and is sure to surprise all the guests.
