The availability of food is no minor issue. The restrictions on economic functions affect the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables, for example. Not to mention that, perhaps, you’re only doing grocery shopping once a week and trying to plan your menu around that.

Maintaining healthy habits during confinement has become a gigantic task. This is true whether you live alone or with others. Plus, we can’t underestimate the stress factor which includes, in part, the fear of getting sick.

Social relationships are a basic need for human beings. Therefore, healthy habits during confinement include maintaining communication with others. Set aside time in your day to talk to friends and family, near and far, using your cell phone, tablet, or computer.

Video calls, instant messaging, and applications for conference calls are all allies that can help you out. You don’t have to interpret them as the enemy–quite the opposite! The sensation of being together in the midst of this crisis can make lockdown much easier to deal with.

Given that many of us are studying or working from home, and using digital devices to stay in contact with others, screen use is bound to increase. This can affect our visual health, and that’s something we need to be aware of.

So, another health habit we suggest during lockdown is to practice caution by adjusting the brightness of your screen adequately. The right brightness will be less tiring on your eyes and allow you to blink frequently. What’s more, make sure your screen doesn’t reflect other light sources, whether artificial or from windows.

The intensive use of screens leads to reduced blinking, which complicates the lubrication of the eyeball. This, in turn, can lead to dry eye syndrome. This is no small matter, given that, if it perpetuates over time, it can develop into more serious problems.

A good idea is to implement the 20-20-20 rule recommended by ophthalmologists. This means that for every 20 minutes of screen time, you should take 20 seconds to rest–focusing on something approximately 20 feet away. This is important both for adults as well as children.

Caring for your skin

By spending so much time at home, and without going outdoors, our skin doesn’t receive the amount of sunlight it needs. This results in reduced production of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is associated with bone health, kidney health, and the vitality of our skin. Under normal conditions, the body takes advantage of ultraviolet rays from the sun’s radiation to form active and functional vitamin D with all its benefits.

For many of us, quarantine means not being able to spend time outdoors. However, it’s important to make a habit of looking for natural sunlight in your home. If you have a patio, then you should be proactive about spending short periods of time there. The same is true if you have a balcony. If neither of these options works for you, then make a point of spending time near an open window.

If you have hydrating creams, it’s important to use them, even if you think you don’t need them. Perhaps you assume you don’t need to protect your skin since you’re indoors. But the truth is that the environment inside homes has many toxins for your skin, for example, perfumes, cleaning products, kitchen vapors, etc.

Managing stress

This pandemic is a stressful situation in and of itself. We’re afraid of the unknown, of not knowing how long lockdown will last and, of course, of getting sick.

Part of managing stress involves establishing a routine that helps maintain your cardiac rhythm. And part of that routine should include getting enough rest. Try not to alter your sleeping patterns, even though your days are very different thanks to confinement.

Another healthy habit we want to suggest is to regulate how much information you consume. It’s easy to become uneasy and anxious if you’re paying attention to the news. What’s more, there are many rumors and myths going around that we need to know how to filter out.

Having healthy habits during confinement isn’t impossible

It seems like a massive task, but the truth is that maintaining healthy habits during confinement is easier than you think. Lockdown won’t last forever, and life will go on afterward. Therefore, it’s important to take care of your health in the meantime.
