“Dextrose” is an alternative name for d-glucose, one of the forms of glucose that exist. It’s an organic compound, a monosaccharide whose chemical formula is C6H12O6.

In nature, dextrose is synthesized through photosynthesis in plants. It’s mostly found in fruits and honey from bees. Furthermore, manufacturers can artificially synthesize it in laboratories. People normally ingest dextrose in the form of more complex carbohydrates that the body breaks down to its simplest forms.

Like all carbohydrates, dextrose is a source of energy for the human body. As it’s a small molecule, the body rapidly absorbs it during digestion. Then, it passes into the bloodstream and from there to the tissues, providing energy almost immediately.

Once inside cells, sugar is transformed into ATP through a mechanism known as the Krebs cycle. This is an essential substance for the rest of the cellular metabolic processes.

The body stores excess sugar or dextrose in the liver as glycogen. On the other hand, when there’s a lack of energy or dextrose in the body, it passes directly to the cells so the body can use it right when you ingest it. If not, the body uses glycogen stores.

You need to maintain adequate and stable glucose levels since, as we mentioned above, your body couldn’t function normally without it. Both low and high levels are harmful.

Constant low dextrose levels will lead to the body not having glycogen stores. This alters many bodily functions, leading to health problems.
