What are the benefits of eggs?

For many years, eggs were categorized as one of those foods that could be bad for people that ate them frequently. They said this food was primarily responsible for the increase in cholesterol in the blood.

These statements were disproved not too long ago thanks to scientific research. They have shown that eggs most definitely don’t alter cholesterol. These new studies confirm that moderate consumption of eggs provides a good amount of nutrients to the body that are necessary to have a healthy life.

What really increases cholesterol in your blood is consuming saturated fats. This type of fat is found in whole milk products, fats in foods like cheese, yogurts, milk, fatty meat, and those fats known as trans fat, which are found in the majority of sweets like pies, cakes, cookies, and, in general, the dough used in bakeries. You have to pay attention because they are called margarine or hydrogenated vegetable oils in the packages.

Among the large amount of studies that have been done on the egg, they have shown that eating one or two a day presents no risk of increasing cardiovascular diseases and that they also possess an essential nutrient for cardiovascular and brain functioning, which is called choline. This helps metabolize and reduce homocysteine, which is a huge benefit because high levels are associated with the increase of cardiovascular diseases.

Eggs are a large source of nutrients


An egg only has eighty calories. It contains proteins, choline, iron, and zinc. The majority of those nutrients are found in the yolk.

The proteins that eggs contain are very good quality. They provide the amino acids that your body requires. One single egg provides approximately six grams of protein. Among the most important functions of proteins, you can find that they contribute to the muscle tissue formation, they are an essential component in all of the cells, a vital part of the immune system, they transport substances in the blood, and are also part of certain enzymes, hormones, and neurotransmitters.

There are also two nutrients in the yolk called lutein and zeaxanthin, which belong to the Carotenoid family. They are antioxidants that help prevent visual damage related to age, like macular degeneration.

Consumption of eggs in pregnant or lactating women is very important because its choline content benefits the fetus in the development of the nervous system and helps prevent birth defects.

Eating an entire egg provides 125 milligrams of choline. A pregnant woman needs 450 milligrams a day and a lactating mother needs 550 milligrams.

Eggs stay fresh in the refrigerator for approximately five weeks. If you want to know if the eggs that you’re going to eat are fresh, simply put them in a glass of water. If they float, they aren’t fresh. Or when you break it and the yolk stays in the middle, it is fresh.

As you can see, eggs are very healthy and aren’t bad for you at all. It is not true that they increase cholesterol, as this has been scientifically proven. These experts also confirm that you can eat up to two eggs every day.

Apart from being nutritious and healthy, eggs are delicious and you can make them many different ways: scrambled, hard-boiled, fried in water… However you want to prepare them, they are all delicious. Don’t stop including them in your daily recipes.
