Glass is often used to make glass bottles, eyeglasses, windows, and a lot of other daily use items as well. That’s right, there are many uses to that wine glass bottle you just threw away.

This material has been around for centuries because not only is it practical, but it has the wonderful advantage of being 100% re-usable.

Unlike other recyclable materials, glass can be completely reused. Therefore, it’s unaltered throughout the recycling process.

This means that every ounce creates the same amount of material after recycling, and is still in perfect condition.

Now that we live in a time where reducing contamination is vital, every idea out there for reusing or recycling is a welcome one.

That’s why today we’d like to share the simple steps for converting old glass bottles into a decorative platter for serving snacks.

How to make a snack platter using a glass bottle

This technique for making a platter from a glass bottle is easy to use, although it does take a little bit of patience and time.

The results are interesting, and you can even add other decorative things to your parties or gatherings.

Materials

  • Empty glass bottle
  • Natural soap or detergent
  • Electric oven
  • Steel wool scrubber pad
  • Wire and pliers
  • Wax paper or fiber paper

Step 1

Clean the glass bottle to recycle

First, you’ll have to completely clean the glass bottle, removing any stickers. This way the platter comes out as one solid color (some people prefer to leave them on though).

If you can remove it by hand, that’s great. But there’s almost always some pieces that are stuck on afterward, meaning you’ll have to pour some warm water and natural detergent in a bowl.

This softens the glue and makes it easier to remove the sticker with a steel wool pad.

But be careful!  Try not to be too aggressive; you don’t want to scratch it or create any blemishes on the bottle.

Step 2

Rinse the glass bottle inside and out with plenty of cold water, making sure that no bad odors are left over.

Then, allow the bottle to dry completely.

Step 3

make a hanger for your glass bottle platter

One option is to use a wire and pliers to make a hanger for your future platter. And so, this is recommended if you only want it to decorate the kitchen wall.

For this, shape the wire into a curve and insert into the neck of the bottle so that it’s firm and flat.

Step 4

Make a glass bottle flat for a platter.

Now you’ll have to focus all of your attention because this is the step in which we flatten the glass.

Lay the fiber paper, or wax paper, on a baking sheet. Place the bottle horizontally on the sheet.

Then turn the oven on as low as it goes, and bake the bottle for one hour.  After that time you can increase the temperature to about half the heat that the oven can produce, and bake for another 20 minutes.

Then raise the temperature as high as it can go (650 degrees C to 800 degrees C), for another half hour, then turn off the oven.  Do not open the oven at this time, the bottle will have to sit in the oven for another 24 hours.

Step 5

After the indicated period of time has passed, the bottle will now be cold, and you can take it out. And finally, it is now ready to use.

To wrap things up, set your imagination free to give it a decorative, special touch.

You can use ribbons, ties, or paint to personalize your platter or to make it look a certain way.

If you want to make it a bit more elegant, you can stick a cork in the top and tie a ribbon around it.

In fact, using minimalist designs makes this snack platter perfect for weddings, birthdays, or any other family gathering.

Of course, the only thing you’ll need after this is the snacks: cookies, biscuits, bread… whatever you can think of!

Try it!

As you can see, this is a great idea!  Recycling glass bottles are easy to do, and you can make incredible decor for the home by doing so!

These and other similar crafts are entertaining, and also give you a chance to be creative and skillful.

The most important thing is that you are being easy on the environment, and even though it doesn’t seem that big of a deal, you will be helping to reduce the negative impact that years of glass use has created around us.
