We run into problems all the time. You don’t have to look for them; they tend to arise out of nowhere. It’s often difficult to accept this, and it also has nothing to do with bad luck. But when you’re faced with problems, do you tend to lose control? Are your problems difficult to control? If the answer is yes, then it’s time to learn how to stay calm in difficult times.

Plato, the famous philosopher, once said that “the greatest and most important victory is to conquer yourself.”

Therefore, although you’re an emotional being like everyone else, your emotions don’t have to overwhelm you when things get complicated.

Reasons to stay calm in difficult times

Before you read some ways to stay calm in difficult times, we’re going to talk about the importance of self-control.

The European Institute of Positive Psychology explains that self-control is essential in preventing your emotions from controlling you.

When you’re dealing with difficult times, it’s may feel desperate, you may scream, collapse, or feel angry and sad at the same time. And you know what? That’s okay!

It’s not a bad thing to feel those things, and you shouldn’t try to repress those emotions.

In fact, managing your emotions doesn’t mean not expressing them or repressing them. It’s nothing like that. Instead, you should make sure to let your emotions out.

That’s because pent-up emotions are a ticking time bomb.

Strategies to help you stay calm in difficult times

Now that you understand the importance of self-control when things around you get difficult, it’s time to learn some guidelines that you can use to stay calm in difficult times.

Don’t stress too much about putting them all into practice at once. It’s best to go little by little.

1. Breathe consciously

This may seem like a silly recommendation that you’re tired of hearing. However, you have to trust that it works. Breathing consciously will help you calm all the emotions you’re dealing with.

Remember, you’re not trying to suppress them. Instead, you’re trying to reduce how strong they are so they don’t get out of control. Inhale deeply and exhale. Also, if you can spend a moment alone to do it, that’s even better.

2. Distance yourself and disconnect

When you’re faced with a difficult situation, it may be hard to look at things in perspective. Because of that, after you’ve tried breathing consciously, you should distance yourself from the situation and disconnect.

Try washing your face, taking a walk, playing a game, playing a sport, calling a friend, or listening to music. Do something to distance yourself. Believe us, it will help you stay calm and better cope with your problems.

3. Write your feelings down

After trying the first two things, take some time to write your feelings down. Writing is very therapeutic and can help you sort out your emotions.

In addition, you’ll be able to reread what you’ve written and analyze your feelings from a more objective perspective. This is a great way to help you stay calm in difficult times. Also, you can do it every day!

4. Face the situation

Now, you’re ready to face the situation. You can do so with peace of mind, without being overwhelmed by emotions, and without feeling like you can’t cope with the problem.

You’ll see that there are many ways out of this problem that you couldn’t see at first. Despite the problems you’re faced with, there are always going to be alternatives.

Stay flexible with your circumstances and start thinking of small actions that can bring you closer to completely solving the problem. You’ll get closer and closer to a solution, one step at a time.
