Any doorknob can gradually deteriorate due to constant use or lack of maintenance. It either tightens or loosens and there are times when you have no choice but to change it. And you’re in luck, today’s article will tell you just how to do it

As you will already know, doorknobs should always be in good condition as they’re all about security. So, you must replace them as soon as you detect a faulty system in order to avoid major damage. The good thing is you can do it if you want to save on labor.

What does it take to fix a doorknob?

Firstly, you’ll need some tools to disassemble the doorknob. You’ll need a screwdriver that fits the size and type of screws of the plates.

Also, you’ll need a lock lubricant to loosen the knob. In addition, you might need a new knob to replace the old one.

Step by step on how to replace a doorknob

Fixing a doorknob is easy as long as you know what you’re doing. You can do it, just follow the step-by-step instructions below.

Clean the doorknob to figure out if it needs to be replaced or if it’s fixable.

1. Loosen the screws

The first step is to loosen all the screws that hold the doorknob in place. You must remove both the ones inside and outside to be able to pull it out.

The purpose of this first phase is to remove the covering plate that hides the mechanism to free it.

It’s important to look at the position of each screw to remember where it goes when placing the new doorknob.

2. Apply lock lubricant

Spray all the remaining parts of the knob to lubricate them. This is to get rid of the grime and be able to freely move the mechanism.

It’s also to remove any excess dirt and make room for the new knob.

3. Remove the ball and the grip that make up the doorknob

After removing the trim you should be able to see that the knob has a button. This element presses the ball and the handle to compress the two parts so they hold each other.

You must press the button to disengage the two parts and then proceed to remove them. Thus, keep the latch pressed at all times and pull out both parts of the knob with the help of a screwdriver.

After that, rotate the bolt so that it starts to come out and disassemble the whole knob. Do the same on both sides of the door.

4. Installing the new doorknob

First of all, the new knob must be similar to the previous one so it’ll fit.

Then, you’re going to install the latch. You must screw it properly as it’s the base that provides stability and security to the knob.

Next, put the main knob in place. The trim must be screwed around the door opening and the knob bar must be inserted through these two openings to do so. In addition, hook and secure the handle with the latch so it won’t come off.

As a final step, you must attach the knob, it’s on the other side of the door. Install the other trim, fit the second knob to the bar that holds the main knob, add the grip and then attach the corresponding “nipple”.

Door knobs aren’t only for opening and closing, people’s alternate uses for them often contribute to wearing them out.

How to extend the lifespan of a doorknob?

Doors are constantly exposed to weather and dirt. Thus, it’s important to give them maintenance at least once a month. Apply a lock lubricant to loosen the parts of the doorknob mechanism so it can move freely.

It’s important to be kind to your doors when opening and closing them, as slamming them will surely damage them. In addition, clean the knobs at least once a week with vinegar or a mixture of ammonia and water to keep them shiny.
