Healthy skin is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and touch. It’s smooth yet firm. It has an even tone and looks moisturized, firm, and defined. Plus, it’s free of oil and imperfections.

However, not only that, but healthy skin also provides countless benefits. It protects us, as it constitutes a natural barrier against pathogens. It also helps maintain body temperature and allows us to perceive tactile stimuli related to the world.

Therefore, we must do everything possible to keep our skin healthy with proper nutrition, by using products to care for and moisturize it, and by avoiding contact with agents and substances that can damage it, such as the sun, detergents, pollutants, and harsh cosmetics.

The functions of the skin

The skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. It’s also one of the most important organs of the body and the largest. The skin of an adult of average height can measure more than two square meters and weigh up to 5 kilograms (over 10 pounds)!

The skin carries out various functions:

  • It’s the intermediary in our relationship with the world around us.
  • It’s the first line of defense, constituting a barrier protecting us from physical, chemical, or biological agents.
  • Our skin also helps us regulate our temperature, keeping us cool or warm.
  • It helps to conserve interior humidity while insulating us from the outside.
  • Our skin is a means of eliminating waste from the body through perspiration.
  • Plus, it contributes to the production of vitamin D.
  • It’s the organ of the sense of touch, thanks to which we perceive shapes, pressure, temperature, and even pain.
  • Through the skin, we also give affection. Let’s not forget the great importance of affection in our emotional relationships, whether with our partner, children, or even pets!

The characteristics of healthy skin

There are different types of skin (normal, dry, oily, combination, sensitive), and each requires specific care. However, there are certain features that are common to all healthy skin.

Healthy skin has a uniform tone

We’re not talking about the color, as a person can be white, brown, or copper-skinned. Here, we’re referring to the fact that the tone is uniform when the skin is healthy, without discoloration, spots, or depigmentation.

However, natural aging and the combined effect of external and internal agents (sun, food, diseases) can affect the alteration of the activity of melanocytes, which can result in irregular melanin.

It’s soft

Healthy skin has an unmistakable quality: it’s soft and smooth to the touch, with no rough, dry, flaky, or irregular areas – not even in areas such as the elbow or others exposed to greater wear and tear.

However, as we age, the accumulation of epidermal keratin increases, and basal cell renewal slows down. This will be observed in a thicker, drier, rougher skin with little shine.

Healthy skin is firm to the touch

Above all, healthy skin feels great when you touch it. In this sense, its texture is compact, smooth, and soft, but at the same time solid. It doesn’t sag, wrinkle, or stretch.

On the contrary, dermal proteins (collagen and elastin) lose structure due to illness or poor nutrition, affecting skin’s firmness and making it look flaccid. This also happens as we age, although it’s possible to mitigate it.

There’s no excess oil

The sebaceous glands produce natural oils to provide protection. However, healthy skin isn’t excessively dry nor excessively oily.

High sebum (oil) production can lead to several problems, starting with acne. It also contributes to the build-up of bacteria and dead skin cells, which creates an environment for infection.

It’s well-moisturized

If your skin looks dry or flaky in appearance and texture, it’s unhealthy and lacks moisture. It’s important to maintain hydration to avoid that cracked look.

Now, dry skin is not a health problem per se. However, there may be some underlying pathology if it remains rough, itching, or other symptoms.

Tips for maintaining healthy skin

Maintaining healthy skin is a task that we should tend to every day. It’s not too complex, but it has to become a habit.

Hydration

You should apply moisturizers, preferably after bathing, to help lock in moisture. Also, remember to drink plenty of fluids.

Nutrition

Nourishing the skin and skin is another key to keeping it healthy and elastic. This is achieved by using products that contain collagen.

You should also take care of your diet, consuming carrots, spinach, tomatoes, citrus fruits. Meanwhile, avoid excess sugar, salt, coffee, or red meat.

Daily grooming

General cleanliness is beneficial, but you must take into account several considerations. Avoid very strong products that cause allergic reactions.

Please don’t overdo it with cleansing, as the skin can dry out, reducing its natural lubrication. Too much grooming also reveals obsessive disorders.

Skin brushing

During bathing, use a soft brush or horsehair glove to help in the process of removing dead skin cells and various substances (dust, dirt, mites).

However, you should avoid this if you have wounds or suffer from skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

Sun protection

Your skin should be protected from the effects of sunlight, and not only in summer.

You should apply creams with a high sun protection factor and wear dark sunglasses, hats, or caps depending on your skin type. This is also important in the prevention of skin cancer.

Exercise

Exercise can help to keep the skin healthy for several reasons:

  • It increases blood flow.
  • The skin receives more nutrients when you exercise.
  • It helps your skin maintain elasticity and tone.
  • Toxins and other accumulated waste elements are eliminated when you exercise.

Exfoliation

Mechanical or chemical exfoliation of the skin helps remove dead skin cells that accumulate on the surface, contributing to the natural renewal process.

Exfoliate with some frequency, but don’t overdo it.

Quit tobacco use

If you want to have healthy skin, the best thing you can do is quit smoking.

Smoking dries out the skin, decreases oxygenation, and constricts blood vessels. According to research, it even affects scarring and favors the appearance of other dermatological alterations.

Avoid other harmful substances 

Chlorine from swimming pools can be a triggering factor for some skin conditions, such as atopic dermatitis.

Therefore, it’s advisable to be careful and take the necessary precautions.

Avoid stress

Last but not least, according to studies on the subject, between 30% and 70% of skin diseases are related to psychological disorders.

So if we want healthy skin, we also have to pay attention to how we think and feel.

Healthy skin is a sign of good health

Healthy skin looks beautiful to the eye and feels good to the touch. A healthy appearance also has an impact on your mood. It’s a harmonious circle.

Of course, skincare should be like everything else we do: in moderation. Excessive use of products and over-cleaning can have consequences worse than diseases, both for the skin and for our behavior.

Having healthy, beautiful skin is something many people will want to show off and flaunt. However, this can also be counterproductive. Particularly in the summer, exposing it to the sun or other agents can lead to more damage than usual.
