How to Make Your Own Lampshade
If you’re wondering how to make your own lampshade, maybe it’s because you need to dim the bulb or diffuse the light better.
However, beyond that, lampshades are subtle elements of decoration. They’re much more than a mere functional element.
Although lamps usually come with their own lampshade, they can be made of a wide variety of materials, including paper and fabric. Even those made from recycled materials are becoming fashionable!
Let’s take a closer look.
Make your own lampshade with paper
Paper’s a very malleable material that can be of great help to carry out almost any craft. Here’s how to make a lampshade out of it.
Materials needed to make your own lampshade with paper
- Thin string
- Safety pins
- Paper clips
- Tape measure
- Paper cut-out
- Rubber eraser
- Wallpaper or tapestry
- Recycled lampshade from another smooth, tapered lamp
Step by step instructions
To begin, measure the height of the lampshade along its slant and add two centimeters. Measure its circumference on the wider side and multiply by 2.5. Cut a strip of paper with these measurements.
Make a line on the white area of the paper with a pencil. The line should be parallel to each long edge and 2.5 centimeters apart. Make folding lines between the lines parallel to the short edges, 4 centimeters apart.
Place the paper with the other side facing up. Join fingers and fold along each line, using them as a guide. Flip the paper over and match the lines to form accordion folds.
Place the folds in the short areas of the strip you cut out at the beginning to form a circle. Trim the excess paper and divide the folded paper circle and the screen along the top edges into four parts. Mark with paper clips and the lampshade with pencil lines.
Join the accordion you made with the folds with paper and string. Put strips of paper first to prevent the string from leaving marks. Leave it like this for several hours so that the folds stay in place.
Remove the string and paper. Glue each short end of the folded wallpaper together with silicone. Let dry.
All you need to do now is fit the folded paper with the clips over the base screen. Fasten with two strips of elastic tape at the top and bottom edge. The folds should protrude 1.5 centimeters from the screen. Glue the top and bottom edges to the lampshade with silicone and you’re done.

Lampshade made with fabric
When learning how to make your own lampshade, you’ll realize that fabric’s a material that’s much more resistant to time and dirt than paper. Check out how to use it.
- Tape measure
- Iron ring
- Sewing scissors
- Needle and cotton thread
Step-by-step instructions to make your own lampshade
The first thing to do is to define the size of the lampshade you intend to make. Its circumference varies from 12 to 16 centimeters. Then, define the style and design.
Next, you can cut your fabric. Do it with a clean and precise cut. It can have a slope at the top or be straight, it all depends on the style you intend to give it.
Once you have it, put the wire in place and cut enough to make the inner and outer circumference of the lampshade. Next, sew the wire to the fabric so that the figure you created takes shape. A good pattern can be another lampshade you have.
Then, sew the top and bottom ring of the fabric. Take the iron ring and attach it to the upper circumference using a chain or wire to form the piece that will help you support the lamp bulb in the lampshade.

Lampshades are important beyond their aesthetic value. They’re a way to dim the intensity of light and create ambiance.
What a lampshade does is diffuse the light from the bulb at the top and bottom, distributing the lighting in a more precise way. To do this, the material it’s made of must be thin so that the light can filter through. It might interest you...
