Extra virgin olive oil is a really popular product that, due to its high content of essential nutrients, is considered one of the healthiest fats for the body. For this reason, olive oil masks are great for the face.

Extra virgin olive oil is obtained through the cold pressing of the fruit of the olive tree. Since this method preserves all of its properties, it provides many medicinal benefits.

It contains significant amounts of omega-3 and vitamin E, whose absorption prevents premature aging caused by oxidative stress, as stated in this report by the National Institutes of Health.

In fact, it’s often present in cosmetic products, especially skincare.

However, many prefer to include it in their beauty routine in its natural state. This is because you can easily combine it with other natural ingredients that provide many benefits without causing any side effects.

We’re sure many of you would like to take advantage of this amazing oil so we’re going to share five face masks made with olive oil you can make at home.

Olive oil face masks

1. Olive oil and honey mask

Small vial with honey and twine

The combination of olive oil and honey provides a multivitamin mask. Thanks to its hydrating compounds, it helps to counteract dryness and imperfections caused by toxins.

Both ingredients are gentle on sensitive skin. In fact, according to this study conducted by the University of La Frontera (Chile), honey is highly recommended for its hydrating and healing properties.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil (32 g).
  • 1 tablespoon of honey (25 g).

Method

  • Put the ingredients into a bowl and mix them until smooth.
  • Cleanse your face and apply a fine layer of the mixture.
  • Leave for 30 minutes then rinse.
  • Repeat two or three times a week.

2. Olive oil and coconut mask

The fatty acids in olive oil bind with the antioxidants in coconut oil. Thus, here we have a mask that’s 100 percent natural. It’s also anti-aging, according to this study conducted by Chang Gung University (Taiwan).

These nutrients help to maintain the skin’s firmness while creating a protective barrier against the damage caused by the sun and free radicals.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil (32 g).
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil (15 g).

Method

  • Mix the olive oil with the coconut oil. Once you have a smooth mixture, apply it to your skin before bed.
  • Leave it to soak in without rinsing, so its active agents can act while you sleep.
  • Apply at least three times a week.

  • Put the two ingredients in a bowl and mix until you have a thick paste.
  • Rub the mixture onto your entire face and leave for 20 minutes.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water. Repeat twice a week.

4. Olive oil and avocado mask

This classic avocado and olive oil mask is a natural product that hydrates and repairs the skin.

The avocado’s high content of fatty acids, vitamin E, and other powerful antioxidants helps speed up the cell regeneration process. The capacity of this process decreases with age, as confirmed by a study conducted by the University of Granada (Spain).

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe avocado.
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil (16 g).

Method

  • Mash the avocado flesh and mix it with the olive oil.
  • Once it’s mixed into a creamy paste, apply it to your face and, if you like, your neck and upper chest.
  • Leave it for 30 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water.
