Often, people don’t know how to stop nosebleeds. In fact, lots of people don’t even know remedies or home techniques that can help them.

Therefore, in this article, we’ll give you several strategies to help when your nose bleeds, whether you’re at home, at work, or out and about.

Why Do Nosebleeds Happen?

Stop nosebleeds using cotton balls.

When your nose bleeds, it could be because of several things. However, it’s always because blood vessels in the nasal cavities broke. This type of hemorrhage is very common since the veins are more sensitive in that area.

In most cases, bloody noses don’t present any significant health risks. However, this is true as long as it isn’t bleeding a lot and wasn’t caused by an accident.

Therefore, the main causes of nosebleeds are:

  • Cold or dry air that irritates the skin and hurts the blood vessels
  • Irritation from allergies or colds
  • Sinus problems
  • Blowing your nose too forcefully, causing nasal veins to rupture
  • Wounds, objects stuck in the nose, picking your nose
  • Smelling chemicals or very irritating products
  • Excessive use of decongestant spray
  • Deviated septum or fractured nose

Home Remedies to Stop Nosebleeds

It’s very important to prevent nosebleeds by avoiding the situations that could cause them. For example, keep your environment airy, don’t abuse certain substances, and don’t blow your nose too hard.

That said, here’s the basic protocol to stop a nose bleed quickly:

  1. Once your nose starts bleeding, as long as it wasn’t caused by an accident or blow, the first thing you should do is sit up straight.
  2. Next, plug the lower part of your nose (the soft part) with your index finger and thumb.
  3. Breathe slowly through your mouth and keep your head upright for a few minutes until the bleeding stops.
