Delicious Apple Cream Pie Recipe

This article will show you how to make an apple cream pie, the perfect dessert after having a nice dinner with family and friends.

This apple cream pie is irresistibly different from other versions of this traditional dessert. It’s the perfect mix of creaminess and sweetness from pastry cream with the intense flavor from baked apples. This pie also has a very special peach flavor.

Ingredients

This dessert is totally different from the traditional American apple pie. Below are the different ingredients for each part of the pie.

Apple Cream Pie

Pie crust

  • Cold water.
  • 1 egg yolk (10 g).
  • 1/2 tablespoon of salt (5 g).
  • 1 1/4 cup of flour (170 g).
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar (20 g).
  • 1 stick of unsalted butter (110 g).

Pastry cream

  • 1 vanilla bean (3 g).
  • 3 egg yolks (60 g).
  • 1 tablespoon of flour (10 g).
  • 4 tablespoons of sugar (40 g).
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch (10 g).
  • 1 cup of whole milk (240 mL).

Apple filling

  • 5 apples (200 g).
  • 1/2 cup of sugar (100 g).
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon (2.5 g).
  • 1 tablespoon of butter (10 g).
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice (5 ml)

Peach topping

  • Peach jam (to taste).
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice (5 ml)

How to Make the Pie Crust

In order to make the pie crust, start by mixing the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Then add the butter and knead with your fingers. Next, add the egg yolk and thoroughly mix the dough. Afterwards, add the water until forming an easy-to-knead dough ball. Finally, surround the dough ball with plastic wrap and let it cool in the refrigerator for at least three hours.

How to Make the Pastry Cream

In order to make the homemade pastry cream, start by heating the milk in a pot with the chopped vanilla bean. In a separate bowl, thoroughly mix the flour, sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks. It’s best to add some of hot milk to this mixture, so the ingredients dissolve well.

Once the milk gets to a boil, remove the heat and take out the vanilla beans. Afterward, add the previous mixture and stir everything together, it would be best to use a wire whisk. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens.

The pastry cream is ready once it thickens, so place plastic wrap over the pot to prevent the surface from drying. Put the pastry cream in the fridge along with the pie crust and let them cool.

How to Assemble the Apple Cream Pie

The next step is making the apple filling. Start by preheating the oven to 200 °C. Then peel  and cut the apples into thin slices, and mix them with the sugar and cinnamon. Add the lemon juice to the apples from turning brown.

Take the cold crust out of the fridge and line it on a pie pan. This apple pie should have a 20-centimeter diameter when you cover the entire pie pan. Cut out the excess dough and pour the pastry cream inside.

Put the apple slices and small butter pieces over the pastry cream. Before baking, place some aluminum foil strips over the pie pan to prevent the crust from burning. 

Put the apple cream pie in the oven and bake for 40 minutes. Once the time is up, remove the aluminum foil strips and leave the pie in the oven for another 10 minutes, so everything bakes properly.

Take the pie out of the oven once the crust is golden brown and crispy, and let it cool. Finally, while the pie is still warm, heat up the peach jam along with the lemon juice. Once it gets to a boil, pour it over the pie to add a special flavor to this delicious apple cream pie recipe.
