Our body stores every toxin that it takes in and can’t deal with immediately. Toxins can come from bad food choices, polution, stress, negative emotions, medications or lack of exercise.
These toxins are constantly eliminated naturally by the body (when we go to the bathroom, sweat, and breathe, etc.), but there are some great natural therapies out there which can help us eliminate any backup the body might be struggling to deal with. Practicing these techniques regularly helps the body heal chronic health problems and prevents serious disease.
A simple and cost-effective detox method that you can do at home is oil pulling. It is great for people who have oral problems, such as gum disease, but since the different parts of the body work together, this technique can actually benefit your whole body.
Oil pulling is an ayurvedic technique (an old medical system from India), which is specifically recommended for headaches, migraines, excessive mucus, sinusitis, asthma, skin problems, alergies, oral infections, gum problems, dental plaque, gingivitis, strained teeth and loose teeth, among others.

How to do it
Every morning, before eating or drinking anything or brushing your teeth, put a tablespoon of sunflower or sesame oil into your mouth and swish it around for 15 to 20 minutes, as if you were rinsing with mouthwash.
You can swish the oil around using your jaw and tongue, aiming to move the oil around every area of the mouth. After a little while, the oil will become thicker and foamy, and you may then spit it out. The oil should be a whitish color. If it is still yellow, swish for longer next time.
You can now wash out your mouth with water and brush your teeth. Ideally, you should drink one or two glasses of water afterwards to strengthen the cleansing action.
You may experience a healing crisis when you first begin using this technique. You may notice symptoms such as pimples, headaches, and similar symptoms. This is a sign that the body is cleansing, and should be light, lasting only a few days. If the reaction is strong or lasts longer, reduce the length of your oil pulling sessions, or oil pull every second or third day.
It is always recommended to consult your naturopath or therapist before cleansing the body.
