Drinking detox water is all the rage these days. These drinks are sold with the promise of cleansing the body and improving one’s health. However, not all that glitters is gold: there are a lot of unhealthy myths surrounding detox waters that we’re going to share with you.

Despite that, regular and moderate consumption of detox waters can also be beneficial. In any case, we recommend always drinking these beverages under your doctor’s supervision and ensuring that you are not replacing natural water as your main source of hydration.

What is detox water?

Detox water is a type of water that has ingredients such as fruit juices or spices added to it, to increase its nutritional value. Based on its micro and phytonutrient contents, it can be argued that regular intake of detox waters may promote weight loss. 

As a result, your overall health could improve. These drinks can also decrease bloating and eliminate visceral fat, which would improve organ functions. In turn, your risk of certain diseases would be decreased.

However, there are also quite a few myths surrounding detox waters.

How to make them at home

Making detox water is very easy. Just fill a jug with water, add some lemon wedges or other fruits and spices like mint, ginger, or turmeric. Then, let the contents infuse for a couple of hours. Once that time has passed, you can drink it chilled or at room temperature. 

However, issues arise when some gurus advise doing away with certain foods and replacing them with these drinks. This harms our metabolism since it can even increase blood sugar and cause pancreatic stress.

Others recommend drinking detox water before meals, to make you feel full. Drinking water before eating has indeed been shown to decrease appetite. However, we have to keep in mind that these drinks do contain nutrients, like carbohydrates.

Some benefits of detox waters

Occasionally, drinking detox waters can be beneficial for our health. Here are two of their benefits:

1. They may reduce the possibility of some diseases

These drinks contain a lot of phytonutrients with antioxidant capabilities. Turmeric and ginger, for example, are common ingredients and have many beneficial qualities.

Regular consumption of these drinks has been associated with a decreased state of systemic inflammation. This reduces the risk of developing complex diseases in the medium term, such as cardiovascular ones. 

2. They may help delay aging

The same antioxidants that we just discussed are also capable of neutralizing free radical formation. There is evidence that these compounds, derived from metabolism, are responsible for premature aging.

Also, free radicals play a role in increasing the risk of illness. For that reason, it’s important to balance the redox potential, to avoid early aging as much as possible. 

Some myths surrounding detox waters

Despite the benefits we mentioned, there are several myths surrounding detox waters. Here are a few:

1. Myths surrounding detox waters: They help you lose weight

There is a false belief that this type of water helps activate your metabolism, especially when consumed on an empty stomach. This would then cause an increase in lipid oxidation that would result in weight loss. However, scientific evidence does not support this claim. There are no studies that support this phenomenon.

2. Myths surrounding detox waters: They can cure cancer

Some people try to sell detox water as a remedy against cancer after the tumor has begun to grow. They claim that daily consumption will be able to slow the tumor’s growth, and even kill cancer cells.

The truth is that, although the antioxidants in detox waters can decrease the likelihood of developing this disease, they do not have magical properties when it comes to fighting cancer. Other, much more effective dietary strategies can help improve the effects of chemotherapy.

Detox waters are good, but they’re not a panacea

Drinking detox waters regularly, especially when well-planned, can be very beneficial for our bodies. However, they do not have the miraculous powers that some people claim they have. 

The key is to drink them as part of a healthy, balanced, and varied diet. Also, you should keep in mind that they should not replace your regular water consumption. Instead, they should be a complement to it.

Also, remember that if you are suffering from any type of illness, you should always talk to your doctor first. These types of drinks will not solve the problem on their own. You’ll need to take other measures, which may require the use of certain medications.
