7 Foods that Protect Against Diabetes

Type II diabetes has become increasingly more common in recent years. Even more worrying is the fact that, in the past ten years, the age at which this illness appears has lowered from seventy to forty, on average.  That’s why it is very important to learn to recognize foods that could help prevent this condition.

First and foremost, you need to keep in mind that the foods we are going to list below do not achieve the desired effect if they are not accompanied by other healthy foods that should be incorporated into your daily diet.  In addition to keeping a healthy lifestyle that incorporates frequent, good physical exercise, maintaining a healthy body weight is also very useful.

Curry

Even though it is still not clearly shown to effectively help prevent type II diabetes, a few studies have been conducted that have produced very positive results regarding the development of this condition. One notable study produced information from a group of 240 patients.  These patients were at high risk of developing diabetes; although they didn’t have very high blood sugar levels, they were slightly raised.  These patients were divided into two groups.  One of these groups was administered turmeric extract, a spice that contains the compound known as curcumin, which has the ability to prevent diabetes.  The other group of patients only received a placebo.

At the end of the study, researchers proved that patients treated with turmeric did not develop the disease, while the other patients, for the most part, ended up suffering from diabetes.

Cinnamon

CinnamonCinnamon has a great ability to improve blood glucose levels.  It is recommended to consume it by adding it to the following dishes, drinks and refreshments, which will also give them a pleasant taste.  Adding it to baked apples makes them an excellent dessert.  Add cinnamon to chocolate or coffee, as well as any other refreshment, will make it tastier and healthier.  Try it.

Coffee

Not only is it a very pleasant beverage, but it also helps us relax and stay awake and alert.  This could be a very useful drink for helping prevent type II diabetes as some studies by the University of California, Los Angeles, has discovered that (controlled) coffee consumption increases SHBG protein levels in the blood, which could prevent the risk of diabetes.

Blueberries and apples

Apple

Consuming several portions of this fruit throughout the week could help prevent the risk of diabetes, because this fruit contains large amounts of anthocyanins, which are substances that could prevent diabetes.

Dark chocolate

Recent studies show that individuals who frequently consume dark chocolate with some regularity has a much lower risk of suffering from type II.  They also avoid the vast majority of cardiovascular diseases.

Nuts

Nuts

Regular nut consumption, as well as all sorts of dried fruits, is very important for protecting the body from diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular problems.  You must eat at least one handful of nuts a day in order to reap the benefits.
