7 Beauty and Makeup Myths that Are Actually True

Some makeup myths sound like something the cosmetic industry might invent, but these ones are actually true. Pay attention to them if you want to keep your skin healthy!

Beauty tips are everywhere. A lot of them are also passed down from generation to generation. While some of them are 100% myth, others are actually 100% true, as strange as they may sound.

Here are some actually true beauty myths, and some explanations for each one of them. Pay close attention to them, because your health and beauty may depend on them.

1. Mascara should be replaced every three months


You know the makeup myths that sound like they were invented just to get you to buy more makeup? Well, this sounds like one, but actually you do need to throw away your mascara after three months of use.

The liquid consistency of them makes them a perfect home for bacteria. When you take the brush out of the tube every day, you’re inviting bacteria in. After three months, mascara could give you an eye infection.

  • If you notice that your eyes are red, irritated, or burning, try to remember when you started using your current mascara.
  • Keep in mind that if you put your makeup on in an unhygienic or polluted environment, the expiration date will be sooner.

2. Using a toner is necessary for all skin types

This “myth” has some truth to it. It originally came from the fact that facial toners were usually designed for oily skin and acne prevention. That’s why now people think that they don’t need to use toner if they don’t have oily skin.

However, there are toners created for all skin types and conditions. You just have to choose the right one:

  • If your skin needs to be exfoliated or is oily, use ingredients such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or lactic acid.
  • For irritated skin, use a toner with chamomile, cucumber, or vitamin E.
  • If you want extra moisture, try out some toners with glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and rosewater.
  • To minimize age spots, a toner with vitamin C can help.

3. Toothpaste can get rid of pimples

Out of all of our makeup myths, this one sounds the most false, doesn’t it? Actually, the hydrogen peroxide and tryclosan in toothpaste are perfect for drying up pimples.

Toothpaste is also antibacterial, so it can help prevent bad breakouts. That said, there’s nothing in toothpaste that makes it more effective than conventional treatments.

  • Though it has a drying effect, it can irritate sensitive skin and make it red and scaly.
  • If you notice these symptoms, change toothpastes or use a different product.

4. Red nail polish turns your nails yellow

This one is true, because nails do absorb pigment from nail polish. The best way to prevent discoloration is to apply a clear base coat first. The clear coat will absorb any extra pigment and protect your nails. If you forgot to use a base coat, then take your red polish off as soon as possible.

5. Sleeping with makeup on will give you blackheads

This myth may seem like a marketing ploy to sell makeup removers, but it’s actually true. At night, your skin repairs itself and sheds dead skin cells so that new ones can replace them.

If your skin is coated with makeup, your pores get blocked and the regeneration process is hindered. So if you’re too tired to fully remove your makeup at night, try to at least wipe it off with a cotton ball and warm water.

6. Waxing keeps hair from growing back as much

Waxing is more effective than shaving because it removes the hair from the root, which means that it will take longer to become visible again. Although it doesn’t keep hair from growing back altogether, it’s true that regular waxing can keep you hairless for a long time.

The reason is that it continually weakens the hair and damages the hair follicles, eventually preventing it from growing back.

7. Your skin gets used to skincare products over time


Some of makeup myths are half-truths, and this is one of them. Depending on the ingredients in your products, your skin may get used to them. This happens especially with vitamin A.

It doesn’t happen with other ingredients, like antioxidants, moisturizers, and peptides. Still, the benefits of certain beauty products stabilize because they reach a point where they can no longer make changes in your skin.

When that happens, you’ll have to choose another product to continue having progress. Try out different active ingredients or ask your dermatologist for suggestions.
