Painting your home, whether it be the inside or outside, is a decision that requires a lot of thought. It’s not something you have to do every day, of course, so it’s important to make sure you’re happy with the choices you make.

Logically, the first thing you’ll want to consider is the color. This will depend on your personal tastes, the furniture you own, and the environment surrounding your house.

Then, it will be time to choose from the many techniques for painting a home. We’ll tell you a little about each of them so you can make an educated choice when the time comes.

5 Techniques for Painting Your Home

1-Blurred effect

Without a doubt, one of the most elegant styles you can choose to get a unique touch in any room is the blurred technique. To achieve it, you’ll do something known as rag rolling.

It consists of the following steps:

  • Wear gloves for all of these steps.
  • Wrap a rag and soak it thoroughly in turpentine.
  • Rub the cloth over a wet wall and note how the areas you touch lose their color.

There’s another way to achieve a similar blurred effect as well. You’ll need two colors of paint, a mixing tray, a roller paintbrush, newspaper, and some plastic. The colors should be in the same range but different hues.

Follow these steps:

  • Paint the wall with the color you want more of, whether it’s the lighter or darker one.
  • Wrap the roller with plastic, apply some of the second hue from the mixing tray, and wipe off any excess with the newspaper.
  • Roll the other color of paint on the wall so that you get lighter and darker shades, as desired.

2-Linear effect

This is definitely a departure from the classic style, but it can give your room an elegant look.

In the end, you’ll have very thin vertical lines on your wall where you can barely see the background color. It’s very simple to achieve.

Here are the steps to follow:

  • Paint your walls whatever primary color you want the room to have.
  • While the paint is still fresh, use a straw broom to draw the lines.
  • Always apply the broom bristles to the wall from the top down, never in the opposite direction.

Although this is an informal style, try to be tidy with the lines to get the desired effect.

3-Rollers with shapes

This is a great way to create prints on the walls. You’ll need a special roller with a ready design for decoration. These were popular many years ago, when wallpaper was still expensive and inconvenient to use.

Once you have the choice shapes, follow these steps:

  • First, paint the walls a background color. If the original paint is still in good condition, you can leave it as is, but remember that once your designs have been added you won’t be able to change the background without erasing the whole thing.
  • The shapes you add should be in a bold color that stands out. Use your roller brush to soak up the paint and use this for drawing on the wall.
  • Completely soak the roller with paint and remove any excess with newspaper.
  • Paint the wall from top to bottom, and then from side to side.
  • Try not to leave too much space between the passes so that there’s a continuous effect, unless that’s the look you’re going for.

General Advice for Painting

Odds are you already have these in mind, but some basic advice never hurts, no matter what technique you choose to paint your home:

  • Cover any furniture to avoid spills.
  • Start painting at the top, near the ceiling.
  • Test the color and other effects before applying it directly to the walls.
  • Paint in a well-lit and ventilated location. Remember that the paint will darken as it dries
  • Choose quality paint and enamel as much as possible. Remember that choosing cheap paints can wind up being expensive in the long run.
  • Let each layer dry for at least six hours before adding another.

Now that you know about these different techniques for painting your home, it’s time to get started! If you’re not able to do it yourself, a professional decorator can help give you some help so you’ll be sure to get the results you’ve always wanted.
