Even if we don’t want it to, it seems that our lives insist on changing us. We are stressed, irritable, mad at everyone…
The everyday vortex doesn’t allow us to relax or stop even for just a minute to recharge ourselves, lower the rate of our heartbeat.

And, sometimes, not even that works because two weeks isn’t enough time to completely destress ourselves from everything that has accumulated throughout the year.

Is it easier for human beings to be nervous than to stay calm?
It is true that our mind is restless and that it has a continuos need to explore. However, there is a great difference between that and not being able to sleep or if you are always fighting with those around you.
That is why it is fundamental to know how to control your nerves when faced with any situation: an exam, a work interview, an appliance breaking, arriving late to work because of a problem with the subway or an increase in your electric bill.
Tips for controlling your nerves
Even if you think it is normal to live here and there, this is not good for your mental or physical health. Therefore, today, more than ever, you should learn to control your nerves and anxiety.
Keep the following tips in mind:
1. Identify what makes you nervous
Maybe it is the fact that your boss speaks to you a certain way or that he asks you to do certain tasks, that your colleagues cannot agree on a certain task or that traffic keeps getting more and more chaotic in the city you live in.
Once you recognize the things that “put you on edge,” it will be easier to control your nerves.
- If you already know that a meeting with your boss is a stressful situation, you can go into it predisposed to the discussion or the solution.
- So that traffic is no longer a problem, try taking another route or leaving your house earlier.
In relation to the previous point, a good technique to keep anxiety or nerves from overpowering you is being able to consciously breathe.
What does this mean? That you can control how the air comes in and out of your lungs.
Maybe you have never realized it, but when we are very stressed, our breathing becomes superficial, choked and difficult.
If in this moment, we close our eyes and breathe in deeply a few times, we will be able to control certain emotions. It is perfect for avoiding a discussion or saying something that we will later end up regretting.
- Conscious or deep breathing tells our brain that everything is going great and that we do not need to worry.
- We also recommend that you do not wait until you are in a stressful situation to start breathing better. Instead, make it into a habit that will change you into a more serene person.
3. Put your pressures aside
On occasion, our nerves appear when we are asking too much of ourselves. We hope that everything goes perfect and this makes us lose sleep and we cannot remain calm. We cannot accept failure or mistakes and, maybe, that is why we will not let ourselves relax.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that we should stop expecting the best from ourselves. Instead, we should accept that, on occasion, things don’t go how we had expected.
Instead of asking ourselves: What will go wrong? Change it for: what will go well? Even when we are faced with bad news or experiences, we can learn from what has happened.
4. Don’t worry about the things that you cannot control
There is an arabic saying that goes: “if the problem has a solution, then why are you worrying? And if the problem doesn’t have a solution, then why are you worrying?”
There are many things that we do not have the power to change, improve or control. And, paradoxically, these are the things that make us the most nervous.
That it rains the day of your wedding, that there is an accident on the highway or that your colleague is sick the day of an important meeting are all things left up to chance. You should learn how to face them in the best way possible.
This will relieve some of your pressure and allow you to enjoy life a bit more.
5. Make contact with nature
Sitting down in a park, going camping and hear the birds sing, walking along the sea shore are all activities that are highly recommended for controlling nerves
Contact with nature has an almost “magical” and inexplicable effect.
Maybe because it allows us to return to a more pure and true state, or because it is a meeting with mother earth. The truth is that these famous “escapes” to a place outside of the city recharge our batteries in an impressive way.
Hiking in the forest or in the mountains, walking by coves or cliffs and staying more than one night in a place that is not contaminated with lights or sounds, are all important for not feeling so nervous.
