3 Ways to Make Homemade Rice

1. How to Make Perfect Homemade Rice

Making simple white rice can be a little more complicated than it looks; good rice shouldn’t stick and have the perfect texture. The result and cooking method depends on what kind of rice you’re using (there are more than 2000 types), the weather, etc.

Ingredients

  • 4 teaspoons of salt (20 g)
  • 2 cups of rice (400 g)
  • 4 cups of boiling water (1 L)
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil (20 g)
White rice


  1. Heat the oil in a pot and add the rice.
  2. Stir the rice until it becomes transparent.
  3. Add the boiling water, salt, and stir.
  4. Cover it and let it cook over low heat for 17-20 minutes.
  5. Let it sit for 5 minutes before serving.

This white rice goes good with meat, fish, vegetables, and is wonderful to use in salads. You can add minced garlic or onions to give more flavor, or replace the water with chicken broth or vegetable stock. 

2. Lemon Rice

This is a different way to make homemade rice. Lemon rice can be served with all kinds of plates.

Ingredients

  • Salt (to taste)
  • Juice of 2 lemons (20 ml)
  • 1/2 cup of chopped cilantro (50 g)
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil (20 g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of curry powder (3 g)
  • 1 teaspoon of grated ginger (5 g)
  • 2 cups of cooked white rice (400 g)
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds (10 g)
  • 1/2 cup of tree nuts (walnuts, almonds, etc.) (100 g)

Preparation

  1. Put the oil in the frying pan. Once heated, add the mustard seeds, tree nuts, ginger and curry. Stir it constantly for two minutes.
  2. Add the cooked rice and lemon juice and stir it well. Let it cook for 3 or 4 minutes, or until the rice is hot.
  3. Add a touch of chopped cilantro and serve.

3. Mushroom Risotto

Mushroom Risotto

Risotto is an Italian rice dish that has become very popular worldwide. It’s a perfect rice variety you can use at home. It’s a type of short rice that has a lot of starch, which you can use with a lot of different ingredients.

It has an irresistible creamy texture that excellent for homemade rice. It’s different from dry rice because it doesn’t expel water. With risotto, you can gradually add and remove liquid.

Ingredients

  • 1 onion (40 g)
  • 2 cups of rice (400 g)
  • Olive oil (to taste)
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • 1/2 stick of butter (50 g)
  • 1/2 cup of white wine (50 ml)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (to taste)
  • 1 1/2 liters of vegetable stock (celery, carrot, onion, and garlic)
  • 2 cups of mushrooms. You can use any type of mushroom you’d like, Portobello or others. (400 g)

Preparation

  1. Prepare the vegetable stock. Add 2 liters of water to a pot. Add celery, onion, carrot, and garlic cut into large pieces. Sprinkle some salt and let it cook over a low flame for 35 to 40 minutes. Put it to the side.
  2. Clean and cut the mushrooms. Brown them lightly in a frying pan with olive oil and a little bit of garlic. Put it to the side
  3. Cut the onion into little cubes. (“brunoise“)
  4. In a large frying pan, add a little bit of olive oil and the onion. When they become transparent, add some butter and stir well.
  5. Add the rice and let it brown for 2 or 3 minutes.
  6. Pour some white wine and let it evaporate, stirring constantly.
  7. Add the mushrooms, a dipper full of broth and stir constantly in a circular motion.
  8. When the broth has been almost completely absorbed, add another dipper full and continue stirring. Repeat this process a few times.
  9. When this rice is ready (cook it thoroughly, for about 17 minutes) remove it from the heat and add a good sized scoop of butter and parmesan cheese. 
  10. Stir it well and serve.
